Summer has arrived in schools
The change of pace, the heat and the excitement that characterise the final weeks of the school year in Spain

The end-of-term atmosphere in schools
There is a period in the school year in Spain that is rarely named, but that all schools recognise.
It's not exactly the end of term, but it doesn't feel like the middle of the year anymore either. Classes continue, routines are being maintained, and everything is ticking along, but the atmosphere in schools is starting to change.
In many parts of Spain, the arrival of summer is impossible to ignore. Classrooms become warmer, concentration becomes a little more difficult, and the final weeks of the school year settle into a gentler pace.
Summer hasn't officially arrived yet, but it's already making itself felt around the school.
Changes in the dynamics during the final weeks of the academic year
In the weeks leading up to the summer holidays, the focus naturally shifts in schools.
Teachers are wrapping up the school year whilst coming to terms with the weight of everything they have achieved over the past year. Pupils can clearly sense that the holidays are just around the corner. The days feel more intense, even though nothing has changed in the calendar.
It is not a break in the school term – it is a transition towards the end of the term.
Looking forward to the summer holidays
What characterises this time of year in schools is the build-up to the summer holidays.
Summer is no longer just a distant date in the school calendar. It comes up in conversations, in plans for end-of-term activities and in little everyday remarks.
There is still work to be done: assessments, wrapping up projects, internal organisation, but also a growing realisation that the end of the term is drawing near.
A calm feeling of the excitement of what is to come is starting to take hold in schools.
The “in-between” period at the end of the school year
Routines don’t disappear, but they do start to ease off. The sense of urgency subsides. Attention spans stretch. Everything continues to run smoothly in schools, but at a different pace during these final weeks of the school year.
It’s one of those transitional phases in the school year in Spain: the school is still open, but it’s already winding down for the end of term.
Start of the summer holidays in schools
And then, almost without anyone noticing, the end of the school year arrives and the summer holidays begin.
The school is gradually emptying. Daily routines come to a halt and the school holidays begin.
Many teaching teams and school staff continue to work for part of the summer, wrapping up outstanding tasks and preparing for the next school year. But the pace changes completely.
It’s time to slow down, switch off and recharge your batteries.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish all school staff in Spain a very happy summer holiday.
